October, November, and December  2006

Annual Picnic: For the last eight years, the Oakwood East community has held an annual picnic. We average approximately 200 people in attendance, this year was no different. We enjoyed hot dogs fresh from the grill cooked by Don Sullivan, fried chicken provided by Midwest City Neighborhood coordinators, potato salad provided by Jan Davis, deviled eggs provided by Grace Sullivan, baked beans provided by Linda Morphis and Carla Garcia. Dessert was ice cream from the Blue Bunny ice cream truck paid for by Timothy and Julie Book. Several other people brought cookies and other goodies. OEHA also furnished drinks. We had one moonwalk with a slide arranged for by Robert Stone. Nancy McKinnis from Midwest City Police Dept. arranged for the Sheriff’s Dept to bring out three of their beautiful horses for the children to pet. Prizes were given to Chrystie and Jeff Sceili, Bill and Linda Coates, Roberto Rocha, Steve Reynolds, Kimmie and Joel Doss, and Tom and Kay Elledge. Congratulations to the winners. We appreciate all who attended. Gary Banz, State Representative District 101, and a resident of our addition, also was in attendance at the picnic. He commented how nice it was to see so many children at our picnic after attending several other picnics that evening. He was pleased to see that our neighborhood is so family oriented.

Street Parking: Please be careful when you park your vehicle on the street. We must be concerned about access for emergency vehicles and obstructing other’s ability to get in and out of their own driveways. This is getting to be a big problem due to each household having multiple vehicles.

Stay-at-home moms. We received an inquiry asking if there are other stay-at-home moms who are interesting in getting together for socializing and coffee. If so, please contact Kelly Brown at Browntm01@aol.com.

Help Wanted! There are certain jobs for the homeowner assn. that we desperately need volunteers for. Some of these are: 1. Check and change out light bulbs at the front entrances of the addition. 2. Someone to check and call OG&E when the street lights are out. 3. Someone to check the playground and pond areas for broken swings and other things needing replacement or repair. 4. Directors and Officers. If anyone is interesting in assisting us in these jobs, please contact Grace Sullivan or come to one of the monthly Directors meeting the 2nd Thursday of each month.

Annual assessments billing process reminder. 1. In December, assessments and notice of the annual meeting are mailed out to every resident of Oakwood East (not less than 15 days or more than 30 days prior to the annual meeting). 2. March 15th is the date to have your assessments paid. 3. April 1st if your assessment has not been paid, there will be a 10% interest charge added to your assessment. 4. May 1st, an accountant’s fee of $25 will be added to defray the additional costs and expenses of collection. 5. June 1st, if still unpaid, a lien will be put on your property and the cost of adding and removing such lien is added to your assessment. 6. November 1st, there will be an additional interest charge of 10% per annum on the outstanding balance and so on progressively. 7. November 15, delinquent accounts are turned over to our attorney for collection. His fees will be added to the unpaid bill. 8. The above process of billing applies to homeowners in arrears for the current year. Any homeowner/person owing any previous assessment, or portion thereof, is subject to being taken to court and attorney collection at any time. Failure by any homeowner to pay dues by the deadline will result in additional legal collection efforts which will add additional monies to that already owed.

Children/Property at Risk: More than one resident has reported disturbances by 7th, 8th & 9th grade boys and some girls that hang around in large groups at the park/ponds area. Fist fighting and even knives have been observed with the crowd cheering on the action. The police have been called several times. During this same time vandalism has escalated. We’ve had 2 swings cut, bridge railing ripped up and an exercise station damaged. We can repair/replace property (although sometimes expensive), but what about your children? You may think the posted signs requiring parental supervision is ridiculous, especially for your child in that age group, but are they really? That age group requires some monitoring/spot checking don’t you think? The neighborhood is not responsible for your unsupervised children. In fact, some report that when they try to intervene for safety sake, they are lambasted for their efforts. One of yours??

Trailers and Boats: The Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions, Article 8, Section 8.19 – Other Vehicles reads as follows: “No trailers (travel trailers, house trailers, work trailers, boat trailers, etc.), mobile home, boat or any other recreational vehicle shall be visible from any street, and all trailers and recreational vehicles must be kept in the dwelling’s garage or on a separate pad in the backyards of the dwellings so as not to be visible from any street within Oakwood East.”
We realize these “other vehicles” are usually seasonal and in and out of your driveway often for cleaning up, unloading, etc. from an outing. The intent of Article 8 above is that your driveway and front yard not be a storage place for these items. We appreciate those using other facilities to store these vehicles, which keep our neighborhood uncluttered. Our covenants have been upheld in court, and it is costly to the few who refused to comply.
